It’s always good to see Australian brands getting things done for us mountain bikers and Victorian brand Reckless Race Concepts have been around since 2016, designing clothing here in Australia. They sent us some of their gear, a spray jacket and their AM shorts to test out recently and here’s what we thought of them.

Spray Jacket

The spray jacket I tested was an XL size, they recommend a size larger than a normal jersey size. The size felt spot on, I’m normally in an L size jersey. There are waterproof zips on 3 roomy pockets, the two down below are quite large and there’s a smaller pocket ideal for a mobile phone, chairlift pass or other small item up on the chest.

The jacket does a good job of protecting against both wind and rain, I wore it for almost a full day at Thredbo back at the start of April, with 70kmh+ wind gusts across the chairlift the jacket did a good job keeping these out! One downside to all that warmth and protection as with any rain jacket, is that they can feel a little hot to wear on a warmer day. In the chilly air of Thredbo that wasn’t such an issue, it did feel a little warm by the end of a Flow race run but opening up the front zip a little and adjusting the velcro arm cuffs helped here. These velcro arm cuffs let you change the tightness at the wrist, fully open the cut is roomy on my arms , I found these felt best about half way in.

Around the neck the jacket comes up a few centimetres, helping out when the rain gets heavy. The inner is lined with mesh fabric that helps wick moisture and also stops the jacket sticking to your skin, as I’ve had other rain jackets without the mesh do. There’s also a bottom adjuster cord that lets you adjust how tight you want it down the bottom.

The only thing I could fault on this was the length of the bottom adjuster cord, it is on the long side. But a quick snip and tie would sort this out quickly, otherwise just tie the ends in a knot when you put it on.

With winter approaching having a decent wind and rain jacket is a good idea, with these currently on sale on their website for $45 this could be one to put on your list.

AM Shorts

The AM Shorts from Reckless are made from a tough Polyester fabric and have a few features around them. Stretch fabric in the centre and at the back, a cinch adjuster on the waist along with one roomy pockets with a waterproof zip. The cut is higher at the back so it doesn’t expose half your lower back when perched in the saddle!

Cut feels good overall, the shorts are nice and roomy in the legs but tight enough in the inner areas to not snag on the saddle when getting active on the bike.

One unexpected test for these happened recently. I was on a trail ride when a dog decided to bite me (queue comments about some owners, etc…) , the good news is that the pants were unharmed. I had a little bruising underneath them but the dog’s teeth didn’t make it through the fabric… a win in my books!

These are also on sale on their website at the moment, for $50 a good value pair of riding shorts.
